OtterText Glossary​

This glossary explains key terms used in the OtterText Terms of Service, Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), AI Policy, SHAFT Compliance Guide, and other policies, available at https://ottertext.com/legal. Contact support@ottertext.com for questions.

  • 10DLC: A 10-digit long code phone number registered for business SMS, vetted by The Campaign Registry for compliance. Used for most OtterText campaigns in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Age-Gate: A verification mechanism (e.g., date of birth entry) to restrict access to minors, required for SHAFT campaigns (21 for alcohol/cigars, 19 for firearms in Canada; 21 for alcohol/cigars, 18 for firearms in the U.S., or higher per state/provincial law).
  • AI Features: Optional tools using artificial intelligence or machine learning to predict outcomes or generate content, such as automated message drafting or campaign analytics. Governed by the AI Policy.
  • AUP (Acceptable Use Policy): Rules governing permissible and prohibited uses of the Service, including SHAFT, anti-spam, and AI Feature requirements.
  • Auto-Refill: Automatic credit card charges to replenish your account balance when it drops to $10, with a $100 default (configurable).
  • Campaign Vetting: The process of submitting campaign details (use case, sample messages) to OtterText for carrier approval, mandatory for SHAFT campaigns in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Commercial Electronic Message (CEM): An electronic message, including SMS, that encourages commercial activity (e.g., promotions, sales), regulated by Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).
  • Express Consent: Active permission from recipients to receive SMS, obtained via positive action (e.g., texting “START,” checking an unchecked box), required for CASL compliance in Canada. Does not expire unless revoked.
  • Implied Consent: Permission to send SMS based on an existing business relationship (e.g., purchase within 2 years, inquiry within 6 months), time-limited under CASL in Canada.
  • Opt-In Consent: Express written or electronic permission from recipients to receive SMS, required for all messages in the U.S. (e.g., texting “START”) and for CASL express consent in Canada.
  • Output: Content or results generated by AI Features, such as message drafts or analytics reports. Customers must review Outputs for compliance and accuracy.
  • Prohibited Content: Content banned unless permitted for compliant SHAFT campaigns, including sex, hate, non-cigar tobacco (e.g., vaping), CBD, and more.
  • SHAFT: Regulated industries supported by OtterText: alcohol, cigars (tobacco), and firearms (including firearm-related businesses).
  • Short Code: A 5- or 6-digit phone number for high-volume SMS, requiring carrier approval and used for some OtterText campaigns in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Toll-Free Number: An 800-number-style phone number for SMS, registered for business use and vetted for compliance, used by some OtterText customers in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Third-Party Technology: Artificial intelligence or machine learning technologies provided by third parties, used in some OtterText AI Features.
