Working with Influencers in the Firearms Industry How to Get Real ROI, Not Empty Hype

Influencers can be powerful allies in the firearm space—or they can be expensive dead weight. The difference comes down to strategy. Too many brands pay thousands of dollars upfront to “big-name” influencers who, in reality, don’t even believe their own reach can deliver measurable results.

If someone quotes you $3,500 just to represent your product, pause. When someone demands that kind of money up front, it usually means they don’t expect to make you that money back.

The truth is, you can absolutely pay influencers what they’re worth—but do it based on performance.

Option 1: Pay for Results—Not Promises—with Giveaways

One of the best ways to work with influencers is through a giveaway campaign that also grows your marketing list.

Example: Let’s say Liberty Stockpile is giving away an AR-15. The influencer creates a review or shout-out video and teases it early on:

“Stick around—at the end of this video we’re giving away a Liberty Stockpile AR-15!”

Then, at the end of the video:

“To enter, text GARRETT to [YOUR NUMBER] for a chance to win. The winner will be announced by text, and you’ll get exclusive offers from Liberty Stockpile.”

Now you’ve turned the influencer’s audience into trackable leads. You can see exactly how many subscribers came from their campaign—no guessing.

Instead of paying a lump sum up front, set a fair payout tied to performance. For example, you might pay the influencer $1 per new subscriber (or $0.25 per subscriber). It’s transparent, measurable, and performance-driven.

Bonus revenue move: Once the giveaway ends, announce the winner by text—and still monetize every entrant.

Example follow-up text:

“Thank you for participating in the Liberty Stockpile giveaway! The winner is Ashley Davis. For everyone who entered, use code Liberty10 for 10% off any order placed in the next 7 days.”

That simple follow-up can realistically convert a chunk of entrants into paying customers—and now you’ve turned a one-time giveaway into a measurable sales funnel.

Option 2: Revenue-Based Deals—The Smart Way to Pay Influencers

The other proven approach is to share revenue instead of paying upfront. You’ve heard the podcast playbook a thousand times:

“Go to our site and use offer code ROGAN for 10% off.”

Same concept here. Create a custom discount code (or tracked link) for your influencer. When someone uses it, you know exactly where the sale came from—and the influencer earns a percentage of revenue.

If you offer 5–10% per sale, everyone wins. Just make sure you can actually pay out if the campaign explodes. If an influencer moves $1,000,000 in product, be ready (and proud) to pay that $50–$100K. That’s not a loss—that’s partnership done right.

Real-world example: USCCA’s affiliate/partnership model pays in two ways:

  • $5 for every new lead added to their database (qualified prospects they can market membership to), and
  • A commission percentage if that lead becomes a paying member.

It’s a two-fold structure that rewards immediate lead gen and long-term conversions. Transparent, fair, and scalable.

Don’t Make This Mistake: “Free Gear for Exposure”

One of the most common traps: handing out free gear with no strings attached.

If an influencer says, “Can you supply targets for my new range? They’ll be in my videos,” that might sound great—but if you didn’t require a discount code, giveaway keyword, or trackable link, that’s on you.

Free product without a tracking mechanism is a donation. Always tie deliverables to measurable actions: a keyword, a code, or a link that converts. And if they’ve already posted, ask for proof. A legitimate partner will share without hesitation.

Final Thoughts

  • Grow your SMS and email lists
  • Drive real, attributable revenue
  • Build trust with authentic creators

But if you’re just writing checks to people who “look” popular, you’re not marketing—you’re gambling.

Lesson for influencers and for retailers/manufacturers/ranges alike: Don’t just give away gear without getting anything in return. Clicks and views are nice, but the scoreboard is more memberships, more sales, more products sold.

Pay for performance, not personality. Track everything, reward success, and make sure every partnership builds your business—not just their following.
